Graphical aids for visualizing Byram’s fireline intensity in relation to flame length and crown scorch height
نویسندگان
چکیده
Summary graphs depicting 20 individual flame length–fire intensity relationships grouped by four different fuel complex types or settings (forest, grassland, shrubland, and laboratory) and 12 individual fireline intensity–crown scorch height relationships for two broad forest stand types (coniferand eucalypt-dominated) are presented. Users will find these quick reference visual aids of value in a wide variety of fire management applications.

Modelling the effects of surface and crown fire behaviour on serotinous cone opening in jack pine and lodgepole pine forests
Amethodology has been developed for defining the various threshold conditions required for the opening of serotinous cones and viable seed release in the overstorey canopies in jack pine (Pinus banksiana) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forests on the basis of fireline intensity and, in turn, rate of fire spread and fuel consumption. The extent of the effects to the overstore...
متن کاملStereovision for the determination of fireline intensity in vegetation fire
Fireline intensity is one of the most relevant quantities in forest fire science. It helps to evaluate the effects of fuel treatment on fire behaviour, to establish limits for prescribed burning. It is also used as a quantitative basis to support fire suppression activities. However, its measurement at field scale for actual fire remains a challenge. Hence, it has been poorly used as a key quan...
متن کاملMeasuring Fire Behavior with Photography
Photography is practical for recording and measuring some aspects of forest fire behavior i f the scale and perspective can be determined. This paper describes a photogrammetric method for measuring flame height and rate of spread for fires on flat terrain. The flames are photographed at known times wi th a camera in front of the advancing fire. Scale and perspective of the photographs are dete...
متن کاملChanges to Cretaceous surface fire behaviour influenced the spread of the early angiosperms
Angiosperms evolved and diversified during the Cretaceous period. Early angiosperms were short-stature weedy plants thought to have increased fire frequency and mortality in gymnosperm forest, aiding their own expansion. However, no explorations have considered whether the range of novel fuel types that diversified throughout the Cretaceous also altered fire behaviour, which should link more st...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effects of silvicultural and fuels treatments on potential fire behaviour in Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forests
Fire suppression has increased fuel loads and fuel continuity in mixed-conifer ecosystems, resulting in forest structures that are vulnerable to catastrophic fire. This paper models fire behaviour in a mixed-conifer forest and investigates how silvicultural and fuels treatments affect potential fire behaviour. The computer program FARSITE was used to spatially and temporally model fire growth a...
